With her single, “Your Type,” out now, we took some time to hear more from Brystan. Read below to learn more about Brystan, the story behind her single, and what’s to come.

Hi Brystan! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

It’s my first name.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I was born and raised in Tyler, Texas.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

I have always loved music, it’s my passion. I’m a very shy person though, but I reached a point in my life where I felt ready to pursue my passion.

Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?

I love all types of music. My mom always listened to artists like Al Green, so I think that helped introduce me to that type of soulful, feel-good music. Growing up in Texas, chopped and screwed was a big thing as well. I like incorporating that in my music as well. It’s very important to me to have that Texas vibe and influence because it’s who I am.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I don’t know exactly what genre of music I am. I guess it would be more Pop. I just do whatever feels right for whatever it is I’m talking about.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I love baking and cooking, but I’m always hearing beats in my head, sometimes a single word can inspire and shape a whole song. Like anything else, you just have to keep doing it to get better and keep growing.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I love artists like Jessie Reyez, Daniel Caesar, Sabrina Claudio, and Billie Eilish. I just think that, lyrically, they are amazing.

Which artist would be a dream to collaborate with?

I would love to write a song with Jessie Reyez one day. That would be cool.

What are some of your future music career goals?

I’m currently just trying to work growing my fan base. I want to reach people that music resonates with because it is so powerful. It can get you through your best and worst times.

Now onto your release, “Your Type.” What inspired this song?

I wrote that song about a guy from high school and just how I felt when things didn’t work out.

What is “Your Type” about in your own words?

It’s a song about rejection. Feeling that you aren’t good enough and accepting that, but also wishing that the person could see that you could be good for them and make them just as happy.

What is your favorite lyric in “Your Type” and why?

“Do pretty girls feel ugly sometimes too, do skinny girls hate their bodies as much as I do.” I struggled with body image a lot when I was younger. I never felt pretty or skinny enough, and I just always wondered if the girls everyone considered pretty and skinny felt the same way that I did about myself because I mean everybody has insecurities.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from “Your Type?”

I am always honest with my music, and speak on what I go through and how I think/feel. In a lot of my music, I talk about hustling, and just going out and working for what you want. I think it’s important for people, especially women, to have that mentality. That if you want something, you need to go out there and work until you get it. From “Your Type,” I just hope that if anybody is going through something similar and hear [the song], that they feel like someone understands what they are feeling; that it will be okay and work out.

What’s one of your proudest moments of your music career so far?

The minute I stopped worrying about and caring what everybody else thought or what people would say about my music was the moment that I really started making good music. I stopped letting people’s opinions of my thoughts and feelings control me, and really said what I wanted to. That’s when I really felt like I was giving my best.

What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned so far?

That great things take time and just accepting where I am in the moment, and not comparing myself to someone else’s success. What’s meant for me, will be.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for?

I just finished recording a new song that I thing is my best work yet. I am hoping to have it released on March 11th. At some point, I would like to get some visuals out and live sessions.
