An Interview with Music Artist DILL DAFFA
With “PIQUE” out now, we took some time to hear more from DILL DAFFA. Read below to learn more about DILL DAFFA, the story behind the latest EP, and what’s to come.
What city are you from and where are you based now?
Born and raised in Orange County, and I reside in LA.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I’ve been very vocal from a young age, but started actually making music in my teens with a producer in a garage writing and singing hooks. Then I was in a band in my late teens briefly and departed to write and work on my own material.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
My grandfather who is on the EP cover is a big inspiration. He is the only member of our family that pursued the arts and music. He was a composer and jazz musician that spawned some commercial success along with acting, and would give me advice when I was a kid and always reassured me that anything’s possible.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
Soulful and vulnerable with melodic undertones and colorful energy.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
I was a gymnast for 10 years or so and still keep up with that often. I’m also always writing at odd hours as my brain pops up with ideas and feelings that I have to jot down at random points throughout the day. I am always trying to experience situations outside from my own norm to grow fundamentally and expand the way I communicate with the listener.
What are some of your future music career goals?
My goal ultimately with my music is to make others FEEL. I don’t really focus on much else besides what I’m bringing to benefit myself or someone else sonically and musically. Everything else is just a bonus if that.
Do you write your own material?
Yes. I write all my own lyrics and I also coproduce and work with my engineer on the overall production.
Now onto your release, “PIQUE.” What inspired this EP?
Feeling like a joke. Not feeling good enough. Feeling ridiculed and not knowing why. The title, “Pique,” pretty much sums up how I felt in one word and still feel.
What is “PIQUE” about in your own words?
“Pique” is about proving to yourself you have worth in what you do even when others hurt your pride.
Is there a specific song on “PIQUE” that speaks to you most? If so, what’s it called and what’s it about?
They all are differently important. “Me or Nobody” I’d say is one of the deeper tracks. It’s about asking someone that is broken and angry and figuring out why they got there in the first place.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from “PIQUE?”
Everyone has similarities and pain, and it’s okay to share how you feel even if not everyone will support you
What’s one of your proudest moments of your music career so far?
Releasing my first EP.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned so far?
Success is what you do to benefit others.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for?
New single in spring/summer of 2022 and a new project at the end of the year/beginning of 2023.
