An Interview with UK Music Artist PleasePrettyLea
With PleasePrettyLea’s single and music video, “Shovelling Shit,” out now, we took some time to hear more from PleasePrettyLea. Read below to learn more about PleasePrettyLea, the story behind PleasePrettyLea’s latest single, and what’s to come.
Hi PleasePrettyLea! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?
Hey! Well, if I am being honest, there’s not some amazing story behind it. It was in a lyric that I wrote when I was younger and it stuck from there really!
What city are you from and where are you based now?
I’m from a town called Dudley, which is located in the West Midlands! But I now live in a small town towards Worcester.
At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?
I was really young, like 6, when I started writing. I stopped at the age of 18 and life took over, but finally got back in to it when I was 25. I got started when my dad started playing chords on his guitar, and I would write lyrics to them.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
Erm, I’d say more so life experiences rather than my upbringing. The music I used to listen to with my dad growing up was mainly RnB, and I feel the music I make is distant from that. The life experiences shape my music now as I speak very literal on experiences that have evoked reactions that have required deeper self-analysis.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
It’s so difficult as I feel that I don’t have a specific genre, but I like the term Theatre Pop though. As it allows my musical theatre roots to be identified within my music.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
Yes, I like running, going to the gym, cooking, and gaming (this is new btw and it’s taking over haha). I think it’s just having so many experiences to write about or finding inspiration in someone else’s experiences. For example, I have recently worked on two songs that were inspired by the Crown (Netflix Series).
Who are some of your main musical influences?
I wouldn’t say I have a huge musical influence, but I do like FKA twigs, Sevdaliza, Johnny Rains, Grandson, and Post Malone.
What are some of your future music career goals?
To have my music played in a film; I aim to write music for films!
Who would be your dream music collaboration?
Grandson and Sadnight Dynamite.
Now onto your release, “Shovelling Shit.” What inspired this song?
Confirming my abandonment issues.
What is “Shovelling Shit” about in your own words?
The song Shovelling Shit was originally called, “the song with no name,” because I honestly did not know what to call it. It was Neone the Wonderer that came up with the name and it stuck. When I was explaining what the song meant to me, I could only explain it as Shovelling all the Shit in my mind at the time. So, that’s basically what it its about, all the shit that comes with self-analysis, because if you listen, it actually doesn’t make a lot of sense HA!
How did the music video for “Shovelling Shit” come about? What was your vision for the video?
Again, the music video makes no sense, but that’s what I wanted. My vision for the video was weird and wonderful things that made you question, why is this evening happening? Much like when you figure things out about yourself, why is this happening? What caused this? How does this make me feel? Each character also resembled a part of my personality, which I feel makes it more interesting. So, think of it as all your personalities having a party in your mind until the hangover kicks in!
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from “Shovelling Shit?”
That self-exploration is a journey, a messy, but beautiful journey.
What’s one of your proudest moments of your music career so far?
I actually don’t know. I don’t really see this as a career because I’m having so much fun. I guess being on Ditto Discovery, as that was really unexpected.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned so far?
Figure out who you can genuinely trust (very quickly), and stay true to your art and yourself.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for?
I have A LOT of releases coming in 2022. January, March, May, July, and so on! Look out for each song to be extremely different from each other in terms of sound and visuals. I’m showing the world how versatile I can be, which is exciting and scary at the same time!
